Antibiotics do not work for viral infections. Taking antibiotics when you don't need them can cause your body to build up a resistance. This is also the reason for ‘superbugs' such as MRSA. Many patients will still attend the GP for viral infections only to be disappointed when the GP fails to provide a ‘remedy cure'. Viral infections are Colds, Flu, Most Coughs and Sore Throats, Some Ear Infections
Why does the GP sometimes prescribe me antibiotics?Sometimes viral infections can develop into bacterial infections, especially in smokers. The GP may prescribe an antibiotic to prevent this occurring. Don't be afraid to ask your GP if the antibiotic is absolutely necessary. The GP may suggest that you try self treatment for a few days and then start the antibiotic if the problem persists.
PHARMACY MINOR ILLNESS SERVICEThis is a service for people who don't pay prescription charges. You can get advice and FREE treatment (if you need it) from your pharmacy without a prescription. You simply register with the chemist of your choice. You don't need an appointment and you can go along at a time that suits you. You will only need to attend the GP if your pharmacist feels that you need to. The Minor Ailment Service covers the following illnesses
NHS 24The NHS 24 website has an A-Z Health Library which gives advice on a wide variety of illnesses. Visit their website for when you should self treat and when you should see a GP.
